It was lovely to be invited to Southgate School for World Book Day 2016.
I have visited the school many times as a Supply Teacher and have been able to share both books. There is a Bewbush Playbus book in all Crawley schools and a story book in the schools I have visited on supply cover. So I knew there was a copy of both somewhere in the school.
As I knew the children had heard the story I had to think about how to make it more interesting. They might be dressed up in their fancy dress costumes but my disguise would be as an author not a teacher so the first change would be no Lego ear-rings! Not the ‘Lego Lady’ this time and certainly not delivering the usual planned lessons.
I would also be Sue Wickstead, the author, and not Mrs Wickstead the teacher.
I also had a short PowerPoint showing the real bus before it became ‘Supersonic’ as well as photographs of children playing on it.
The day was full of surprises and the children listened with interest.
It was great to leave a book in each class.
Reception:- ‘Ireland and Wales’. Their class teacher Mrs Mitchell turned out to be more of an expert than me regarding the original bus! She had been part of the Girl Guide group who had started the project. I knew that the original bus was a pioneering project but did not know its international links until now.
Next stop Year 2:- ‘Spain and Greece’. “Why is there a bird on every page?” was the question.
One of my daughter’s favourite books was ‘Where’s Wally’ and we thought this might be a nice link. Also as an avid reader of the Oxford Reading Tree scheme there was always a common picture link to look for in these books.
Final stop Year 1:- First Holland class followed by France and Italy:- Year 1 had planned a week’s work to follow next week so it was especially good that they now each have their own book to refer to and to share. We had a little time to look at a few good examples of other brightly decorated buses which might help with Design Technology next week , as they hope to make their own 3D bus.
All in all it was a lovely calm day full of Superheroes, princesses, pirates and a whole cast of book characters complete with their books. They even sang me a ‘Happy Birthday!’
