Who were the Airbears?

Did you know?

In the 1990’s each of the British airports had ‘Airbear Mascots’.

Who were the Airbears?

Each airport had two mascots, each bear had an alliterative name to match its given airport.

Harry and Harriot Heathrow;

Percy and Penny Preston;

Eddie and Ellie Edinburgh;

Gordon and Gaby Glasgow;

Stanley and Suzy Stanstead;

Archie and Annie Aberdeen.

How did the bus help out at Gatwick?

In the 1990’s the Bewbush Playbus was asked to help at Gatwick airport during flight delays.

What did the bus do?

The Playbus was asked to come along and park at Gatwick’s North Terminal where it would open up and entertain the young visitors and their families many of whom were caught up in the delays. Daisy Daydream at Gatwick Airport north Terminal

It proved such a success that the service was extended with the Playbus seen during busy weekends in both the summer as well as half-term school holidays.

Not just for children.

While the adults could rest with a cup of coffee they could also play alongside the children. The bus was supervised with playworkers on hand to help alleviate the stressful situation.

How did the link help the Playbus?

The ‘Supersonic Bus’ had been busy raising necessary funds to buy and replace the old bus with a newer model.

The link with the airport helped enormously in the fund-raising efforts and in 1990 The association finally had a new red bus ready to take over.

Once again, the airport stepped up to help; British Caledonian Airways offered the use of their hanger to paint the new bus livery; BAA helped pay for the work to be undertaken.  British Caledonian Aeroplane

The blue and green base reflected the colours of Daisy Daydream and the Airbears appeared highlighting the airport connection.

Off to Newcastle

The bus was painted just in time to head off to a National Playbus Training Rally in Newcastle. It took ten hours to get there and was definitely an exciting event to be part of.

The bus was one of many mobile play projects which drove through Newcastle, across the Humber bridge to the Gateshead Garden Festival.

Gloria the Summer fun Bus

In 2020, Gloria’s book was written, Gloria’s story reflects the exciting summer playschemes that the bus was involved in around town.

Gary and Gloria T partyLike everything the bus spluttered along and broke down at times and in 2020 the pandemic certainly put a halt to Gloria’s personal visits.

She had to ‘Stay at Home’ and ‘Stay Safe’.

However, she did manage to go on a Blog Tour.

Read the reviews from the tour.

Let's hope we can all travel safely once again.

Hopefully by aeroplane as well as by bus?
