‘Surely it is me who should say thank you for being rescued and being able to meet so many different children.’

Just like Jay-Jay this is what I sometimes feel when I visit different schools as a supply teacher. There have been surprises and memorable moments along the way.

I feel a bit like I am in the story ‘Hansel and Gretel’ when I leave a trail of signed books behind me on my journey.

On a recent visit to Year 5 the day started with silent reading and I was then able to say that as well as playing with my Lego (they like that!), I am also a writer. I was amused to watch the double-take from one boy as he looked back from the book he was reading to me and then pointed to my name!

“Yes that is my book,” I was able to tell him.

How nice they had it on display in the classroom and now it is more relevant to the class.

Another school and on the last visit the Year 4’s had asked for my autograph, it made me smile and despite only a half-day visit the book was left in the school.

Mrs Wickstead by Scarlett aged 7A second visit and this time covering Year 2, as I took my book out of my bag to show the class I was surprised when they excitedly told me their teacher had read them that book! It is good to know that my book is being read.

This visit ended up with a two-week cover and I was pleased to take away with me pictures and messages, I have missed this part of teaching.

I just had to leave them their own class copy of the book too.

“I hope you will have another nice school and I hope Jay-Jay is having another nice trip”, wrote Sunny.

I hope so too.

‘What is his new adventure?’ I am often asked, to which I now reply ‘his new adventure is to meet so many children as a story book!’

‘Jay-Jays Island Adventure’ is on its way!
