Bewbush Playbus

CRAWLEY residents of a certain age will have fond memories of the Bewbush Playbus.

It was a mobile community centre and classroom for children between 1980 and 2005. And Sue Wickstead, from Arden Road, Furnace Green, has dug out these old pictures of the playbus for us to share with you. She has just written a children’s book inspired by the bus that called Jay-Jay the Supersonic Bus. Mrs Wickstead has previously written a factual book, called Bewbush Playbus, which was published in 2011. Working as a supply teacher she would often regale her pupils with tales of the playbus. Their interest in those stories inspired her to create the children’s book, which is available on Amazon. The original Bewbush Playbus was an AEC Regent, which looked like a London Routemaster. It was replaced with a Leyland Atlantean in 1990. Mrs Wickstead, a teacher at Bewbush Primary School for 19 years until 2011, was involved in the fundraising to replace the old bus with the new one. The Bewbush Playbus eventually stopped its service in 2005 due to a lack of funding. It lives on, however, in the pages of Mrs Wickstead’s book. *For more on Mrs Wickstead's book see next week's Crawley News.
